What is Vitamin K2

The necessity of vitamin K2 MK-7

01

Is calcium the main cause of vascular calcification?

Calcium is 99% in bones and 1% in blood or cells. Calcium is not only a component of bone, but also a substance that is involved in physiological activities that are important for maintaining life, such as blood clotting, nerve transmission, hormone secretion, muscle contraction regulation, and body pH regulation. Calcium concentration in the blood is kept constant at 8.6 mg to 10.4 mg/dL, but when it falls below 8.6 mg/dL, calcium is released from the bones and absorption is increased in the intestine to maintain homeostasis.

When there is a deficiency of factors that regulate calcium metabolism in the body, such as vitamin K2, the homeostasis of calcium in the body is broken. In this case, calcium in the blood becomes excessive and calcium accumulates in the blood vessels, resulting in calcium calcification. Calcium calcification occurs frequently in arteries, veins, heart valves or coronary arteries, blood vessels in the brain, muscles or ligaments.

When calcification occurs in the coronary arteries, there will be poor oxygen supply to the heart, which increases the risk of myocardial infarction. And calcification of blood vessels in the brain can also lead to dementia and cerebral hemorrhage.

Side effects of hyperlipidemia drugs (statins):
Increased incidence of osteoporosis

The cases of osteoporosis in the EU are projected to rise from 27.5 million in 2010 to 33.9 million in 2025 (Table 1). And most of hyperlipidemia drugs were found to be based on statins, where sales of statins alone accounted for about 78% of the total hyperlipidemia drug market as of 2018 (Table 2).
A research team from the Medical University of Vienna, Austria, conducted a clinical investigation on the correlation between statins and osteoporosis on 8 million people under the age of 90 and confirmed that the risk of osteoporosis increased by 3.62 times or more in patients taking statins compared to the control group (Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases 2019, Diagnosis of osteoporosis in statin-treated patients is dose-dependent). Statin-based drugs have been found to inhibit the metabolism of vitamin K2, which is known to cause abnormal calcium metabolism in the body and increase the incidence of osteoporosis.

Resolution: Vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 activates osteocalcin and MGP (Matrix Gla Protein) proteins, preventing calcium from accumulating in blood vessels and transferring calcium from the blood to the bone.

When we take vitamin K2 and calcium supplements together, it ensures that calcium goes to the bones and helps bone growth and density, and prevents calcium from depositing in blood vessels or coronary arteries which might cause heart disease.

Therefore, vitamin K2 should be taken to prevent calcification of blood vessels and to strengthen bones.
